Keep the Fire Burning

Your gift will spark bright futures.

The glow of the campfire is where lifelong friendships begin. Where songs are shared beneath the stars. Where nervous first-time campers discover confidence.

As YMCA Camp Watia celebrates 10 years of helping young people build confidence, resilience, and belonging around the campfire, you can help ensure that more young people have that opportunity in the future.

We invite you to join us in keeping the fire burning for generations to come. Give online today or scroll down for more ways to support Watia's mission.

Be a part of Watia's story

When former YMCA of Western North Carolina CEO Paul Vest noticed that the region is full of summer camps attended by children who live somewhere else, he set out to give local kids the same opportunity. After years of planning, partnership, and perseverance, Camp Watia opened in 2016.

Watia features many of the same amenities as private camps, but at a more affordable price point. Donations support need-based scholarships, and we also partner with social services agencies to make camp accessible to kids from all walks of life. Over the past decade, more than 7,800 campers have walked and biked Watia's trails, gathered around its campfire, and found a place where they can unplug and connect.

As demand increases, camp is expanding. Construction is underway on a wastewater treatment plant that will enable us to add more camper cabins. In fall 2026 we'll break ground on the Frederick Airnasium, a covered open-air recreation facility. Give today to help us grow!

A legacy of giving

Paul Vest and his wife, Vicki, were at camp most Sundays every summer to greet campers and their families. When Paul concluded more than 30 years of leadership with the YMCA of Western North Carolina in 2025, he and Vicki knew that Watia would continue to serve for years to come.

For Paul and Vicki, Camp Watia has always been about the kids. The child who discovers confidence for the first time. he teen who learns to lead. he sense of belonging that reminds every camper they matter.

The Keep the Fire Burning fundraising campaign honors Paul, Vicki, and their commitment to the children of western North Carolina. Their legacy isn't measured in buildings or acreage. It's measured in lives changed.

Join this unforgettable legacy. Please give today to make a difference tomorrow.

Donating appreciated securities is a wonderful way to help support your community. The Y’s policy is to sell the stock or security and put the proceeds to work locally. Per the IRS, the YMCA establishes the value of the stock by calculating the mean average price on the date ownership is transferred. Many donors also choose to calculate their tax deduction this way using a receipt from the Y that notes the name and number of shares, the date they were received into Y’s account, and the high and low values per share on the date the securities were transferred.

Before making a gift of securities, please make sure to discuss your particular situation, including tax benefits, with your financial advisor. Click here for instructions on securities transfers. Please contact us if you need more information.
